Road Trip - Macon, GA

You can’t compile a list of famous Georgia musicians without the Allman Brothers Band. The Southern rock band formed in 1969 in Jacksonville, Fla., but called Macon home from 1969 to 1979 turning the middle Georgia city into a recording mecca during the 1970s.

The band, anchored by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, rose to fame with their 1971 live album, At Fillmore East. Widely considered by most music critics to be “the best live album ever made.” The album comes in at #49 on Rolling Stone’s list of best albums of all time.

Shortly after that album was certified gold, Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle. A year later, the band lost Berry Oakley to another motorcycle accident. Despite early tragedy, the band went on to great success with a string of hits.

If you want to see the house the band called home from 1970 to 1973, then take a short drive to Macon. The Big House, located at 2321 Vineville Avenue, was the gathering spot for the band, their families, friends, and roadies in the band’s early years.

The house served as the backdrop where the band wrote some of their more famous songs, including Blue Sky and Ramblin’ Man. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday.
